520 miles with 40 lbs, out of the box, and comfy as a leather sofa.
By M. Madden
I was looking for an excellent pair of hiking boots that would last a long time. I finally settled on the Asolo Power Matic 250s from REI, but when the PowerMatics failed me on their first and only real hike of just 5 miles (details for another review) and had to be returned, I was faced with an urgent need for replacement boots in time for a 20 mile backpacking trip in Southern Utah canyon country. Backpacker Magazine had just come our with their 2010 gear awards and featured these babies on the cover, with a glowing review inside. The tester had done 50 miles in the Alps without break in and gushed over them, so I took the leap and ordered them next-day shipping from Amazon. They came the day I left, so I literally took these on the trail with no break-in time at all.The results? Using the Steeps with Spenco insoles (plus liner socks and duct tape on the heels), I experienced cushy and blister-free hiking over 20+ miles with a 40 lb backpack. In addition, I had been determined to not get GoreTex because I didn't want my feet to roast in the heat. But in addition to keeping my feet comfy, these didn't even feel hot, despite the waterproof GoreTex lining and the desert environment. Where my Asolos would not hold my heal perfectly still no matter how tightly I laced them, and lacing them too tightly cut off the circulation to my feet, the Zamberlan 760 Steeps cupped and held my heal completely motionless without even cranking down on the laces. And if I DID crank down on the laces, the boots STILL felt comfy and cushy anyway. All this with a roomy toe box. These boots feature unusually-recessed instep lace loops (see picture), which probably go a long way to keeping the boot tight where it matters the most (across the instep and heal), preventing heal motion and therefore blisters. Add the Vibram soles, the cushy interior, the nice-looking and rugged exterior, and the no break-in supple leather construction, and you've got a sweet pair of boots. Totally worth the extra money spent on them. Is a comfortable hiking experience worth an extra $30-$50? How many times have you been hiking with painful feet and would have easily paid $30 to be spared the discomfort on that trip alone? Though I've only used these on one 20 mile trip, so far they're totally worth it.

5I WOULD GIVE THIS BOOT SIX STARS, IF I COULD!
By William V. Mcclung
UPDATE (May 14, 2011): I have been wearing these boots now for 13 1/2 months, on twice-a-week mountain hikes (6-9 miles each) with the neighborhood hiking club and doing yard work. Besides being a little dirty, they are as good as new, with very little sole wear. They remain solid and VERY comfortable. I was afraid Zamberlan might discontinue this boot, so I just purchased a second pair (the brown color this time). During the year, I have also purchased two pairs of Zamberlan low-top shoes and they are equally as comfortable and solid as the boots. Bottom line: Zamberlan footware reflects Italian old-world quality.....no cheap Chinese imports in their product line.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When my old hiking boots began showing signs of impending demise, I was filled with dread. Finding shoes that fit well is difficult for me. Finding boots that fit correctly is almost impossible. I read about these boots in the April 2010 issue of BACKPACKER magazine (they had awarded the 760 Steep their 2010 Editor's Choice Award). I had never heard of the Zamberlan brand, but decided to give this boot a try, even though I wasn't particularly fond of the gray and red color (Zamberlan calls it "gray and ameranto".That turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I wore the boots around the house for a couple of afternoons and that's all it took to break them in. They are amazingly comfortable on our western North Carolina mountain trails, which are steep and rocky. The boots offer great support and are as comfortable as house slippers! I used to come back from hikes and the first thing I wanted to do was take off my boots. Now, many times I just leave them on until time to go to bed.One of the Backpacker magazine testers put a pair of these boots on, right out of the box, and went on a two-week expedition in an Alaskan mountain range. He crossed glaciers, climbed in crampons and hiked 50 miles across soggy tundra with a 70 pound pack. His conclusion: "This boot delivers tank-like support and stability, with Cadillac comfort".The magazine review said, "It's not the lightest or most affordable new mid weight (boot), just the best ...... spend a little extra on this boot. Your feet will thank us later."I definitely concur with that statement!By the way, these boots are handcrafted in Italy, not in China, like so many other boots available today.....and it shows.

5The Zamberlan 760 Steep, impressions 17 months after purchase
By Aaron B. Brown
This is the second pair of Zamberlan I have owned, and I'm very satisfied. A few years ago when my Vasque Men's Wasatch GTX hikers failed catastrophically after less than 200 miles of use (midsole split underneath the ball of my foot, a failure common to that division of Red Wing shoes now that they are manufactured in China) I started looking for a replacement, and wound up doing a lot of research in the process. I ran across the review of these boots from Backpacker magazine, but unfortunately I initially couldn't find them here or anywhere else so I wound up buying a pair of Zamberlan Baltoro 638s that I got on Amazon for $187 discounted. Another good boot which you can read my review of here. The 760 Steep seems to have been made on rather high-volume lasts, which initially present a problem for me since I have low volume feet, with narrow heels. This issue often makes it difficult for me to find boots that lock my heels in properly. I tried a number of popular brands and return them before buying these over the Internet from a store in the Carolinas, thinking I'd take the risk, and it was the right move. Once broken-in, and with the addition of Green Superfeet inserts underneath the Zamberlan inserts in the summer with medium smart wool and a graduated compression sock underneath that, they work perfect. In the winter that extra volume means I can take out one insert and have enough room to layer Smart Wool Mountaineering socks with a pair of Heavy Smart Wool socks and a liner sock, which should keep my feet warm down to -20 F for extended periods, no problem. Absolutely no hotspots, blisters or heel slippage to date. I no longer think about them once they're on, the way it should be.One of the things you'll notice when you first get these types of Zamberlan boots are the long laces. Seemingly too long, until you realize this extra length allows you to double wrap the top hooks, which in turn allows you achieve a much more precise fit, something that's important for boots you may be putting +10 miles a day on. There is some break-in period for these boots, but not nearly as much as I had with the Baltoros, that have much stiffer and heavier leather uppers. But once you get by that you'll be well rewarded with a shoe that is not only very comfortable but also protects your feet and ankles extremely well, is totally waterproof in snow, slush water, and holds up better than any boot I've ever owned. The nabuk leather uppers wear well, as do the soles, which after 17 months of moderate to light use show no significant wear whatsoever. Make no mistake all Vibram soles are not created equal.Traction is good, especially on hard surfaces, rock, concrete, gravel, ice etc. Snow traction is passable, though not the best I've experienced, I did go down once after losing my footing in heavy snow. I'd say that the Baltoro's Vibram sole type is superior on softer surfaces like snow, dirt, mud etc. It has amazing traction under such conditions.Simply put, these boots are all about quality and workmanship, something that seems to be harder and harder to come by these days, but in my experience the Italians who are manufacturing these boots are doing it right. Terms like 'old world craftsmanship' apparently still apply at the Zamberlan manufacturing plant, and it shows in the final product. These boots cost about $100 more then the Wasatch, but they are also significantly farther up the scale in the hiking boot tier, which runs between. $160 and about $500 for their top-of-the-line welted construction boots, which really are of unbelievable quality. I hope to get by a pair of those someday. They are the kind of boots you can pass down to your children, seriously. Zamberlan does make a couple of products that are closer to Vasques, for about the same price. But if you want the very best boots in this price range, I doubt you can do any better with any other manufacturer in the world. I for one am now a believer. So if your feet are important to you, and you need a boot that isn't going to let you down when you're out in the field doing whatever it is you do, and the last thing you want to think about is your shoes coming apart on you at a crucial moment, buy a pair of these, and I don't think you'll ever have to look down at them again, though they are kinda pretty. :) The beauty of their functionality makes them even more attractive in my eyes.PS One note on care of these boots, pickup some of Zamberlan's Hydro Block Watershed conditioner spray. And just give them a dose once a year, unless you're in really wet conditions a lot, to keep the Nabuk in good shape and fully waterproof. If you have the full grain leather Zamberlan boots like the Baltoro get the Hydro Block cream and give them a good rub down on occasion, the stuff works. I've also used it on kangaroo skin motorcycle gloves and it keeps them nice and supple. Also Zamberlan laces seem to be of superior quality as well, I noticed calluses rising on my fingers at the points where I regularly apply pressure when lacing them up. Something I've never noticed from any other boot laces. I bought a couple of replacement pair as a backup, but as of yet I haven't noticed any wear on these laces at all. Impressive.Hope this helps.
